Historic Name VILLA TERESA HISTORIC DISTRICT
Description of Significance VILLA TERESA HISTORIC DISTRICT IS ELIGIBLE FOR LISTING IN THE NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES UNDER CRITERION A AT THE LOCAL LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE FOR COMMUNITY PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION. THE DISTRICT IS ALSO ELIGIBLE UNDER CRITERION C AT THE LOCAL LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE FOR ARCHITECTURE. THE PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANCE BEGINS IN 1917, WHEN FRANK AND BURDINE ANDERSON BUILT A LARGE, COLONIAL REVIVAL STYLE MANSION ON LOTS 7-8 (1300 CLASSEN DRIVE). THE CONSTRUCTION OF SEVERAL OTHER GRAND HOMES ALONG CLASSEN DRIVE SOON FOLLOWED, MOST NOTABLY AN ITALIAN RENAISSANCE REVIVAL STYLE HOUSE OWNED BY WILEY W. LOWREY AT 1212 CLASSEN DRIVE AND A COLONIAL REVIVAL STYLE HOUSE OWNED BY JAMES AND MARGARET ANDERSON AT 1228 CLASSEN DRIVE. IN 1933, THE PURCHASE OF THE FORMER ANDERSON RESIDENCE AT 1300 CLASSEN BY THE CARMELITE SISTERS MARKED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF VILLA TERESA SCHOOL. AS THE SCHOOL POPULATION GREW, THE SISTERS ACQUIRED THE ADJACENT BUILDINGS AT 1228 AND 1212 NORTH CLASSEN AND CONSTRUCTED A NEW SCHOOL BUILDING AT 1216 NORTH CLASSEN. CRITERIA CONSIDERATION A IS ALSO APPLICABLE BECAUSE IT WAS OWNED BY A RELIGIOUS INSTITUTION AND WAS USED AS A RELIGIOUS FACILITY DURING THE PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANCE. THE PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANCE ENDS IN 1967, WHEN THE SISTERS COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION OF A CONVENT ADDITION TO THE ANDERSON HOUSE AT 1300 CLASSEN. LISTED 09/17/2020.
